About Us
Promoting sustainable development in Stellenbosch Municipality through local knowledge partnerships.
The University of Stellenbosch has launched the Sustainable Stellenbosch programme as a community focussed initiative to promote sustainable development in the wider Stellenbosch through close collaboration with Stellenbosch Municipality (through the Reinventing Stellenbosch programme), community and business sectors. This initiative has been made possible by support from the Kresge Foundation and is carried out in partnership with the Sustainability Institute and TSAMA Hub.
The focus of the initiative is to leverage the knowledge and experience within the University of Stellenbosch to support sustainable, community-driven development in Stellenbosch.
Our activities include:
- Land Reform with a focus on providing access to municipal commonage for emerging farmers. A Commonage Implementation Committee has been established to address land reform in Stellenbosch by the University of Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch Municipality and the Department of Land Affairs.
- Implementation of the Sustainable Human Settlements Strategy which has been adopted by Stellenbosch Municipality to promote sustainable and integrated development in Stellenbosch.
- Launching the Science for Society series of events as a joint initiative of the University and Municipality to promote knowledge sharing and collaboration in the wider Stellenbosch.
- Supporting the Stellenbosch Research Group, comprising of students from the University of Stellenbosch focusing their research on sustainability in Stellenbosch.
- Supporting networking, collaboration and knowledge sharing through this website and the research database, various forums and workshops, the monthly e-newsletter etc.
